Metal Halide Aquarium Lighting - Benefits and Disadvantages

!±8± Metal Halide Aquarium Lighting - Benefits and Disadvantages

Installation of metal halide aquarium lights should not be considered for use in small tanks. Yes it does emit a more intense form of light in a limited space but they do create a lot of heat. So in a small aquarium tank they could soon raise the temperature within it to levels that could prove harmful to the health of the fish being kept in it.

So who should be using such lighting in their aquarium?

This form of lighting should only be placed in aquariums that go to a depth of 3 feet or more. Also it is best used in tropical aquariums where the owner is going to be keeping different forms of coral. Not only will this type of lighting help to provide the kind of intense illumination such plants in water require but will be the only one that can provide light to such depths.

What are the benefits to installing metal halide aquarium lights?

Benefit 1 - These are the only types of lights that will be able to produce "glitter lines" in the water. So helping to make the aquarium and its occupants look even more pleasing to the eye.

Benefit 2 - You will need to mount such lights above the aquarium and ensure that they are kept some distance above it. Many will feel that this ruins the outline of the tank whilst others feel it helps to make them more aesthetically pleasing. This is because you can get some really wonderful looking lighting fixtures to place the above tank that will actually enhance its looks.

What are the disadvantages to installing such lighting?

Disadvantage 1 - The biggest disadvantage to using such lighting is the initial cost of purchasing the unit. Unfortunately this type of lighting will cost considerably more than conventional fluorescent lighting for aquariums would be.

Disadvantage 2 - As already mentioned these types of lights actually generate a great deal of heat so you will need to install a good air circulation system to help ensure that temperatures don't become too high. In fact if you are intending to use metal halide aquarium lights it is best to use a chiller rather than fans to help keep the temperature of the water down. These will cost more than fans but one main advantage to be gained from using a chiller over fans is that not so much water will evaporate.
